Abstract
Patients who are chrtonically ill with the uremic syndrome are clinically improved following the procedure of external hemodialysis. The blood acid base balance is strikingly affected by hemodialysis.
A restoration of blood buffer systems is the most prominent change.
Dialysis removes retained- nitrogenous metabolites :and returns disordered serum electrolyte concentrations toward normal. The purpose of this study is to describe the changes in the acid-base balance present in uremic patients and their modification,
during hemodialysis. 40 patients with chronic renal failure were examined and 13 patients of them :received hemodialysis therapy
The results areas follows:
1) Most of patients with uremic syndrome have metabolic acidosis producing a lowered pH, a decrease in plasma HCQ3, decrease in the buffer base concentration.
2) There is a significant correlation between the creatinine level and the pH level.
3) Metabolic acidosis markedly improved at the end of hemodialysis.
4) Dialysis removes retained nitrogenous metabolites, and returns disordered serum electrolyte concentrations toward normal.
5) There is no change in pCO2 during hemodialysis.
